Pyro pulled it off, handing it to her, he had a long sleeved shirt on underneath anyway, “Your welcome,” he said, smiling, “I don’ got cooties ya know..it might smell a bit like kerosene burning, but tha’s about all.”

Peep smiled slightly and slipped the jacket on, crossing her arms again. “I know, I’m not going to catch anything from wearing your jacket.” She absently, sniffed the fabric, then laughed. “You’re right. It does smell like Kerosene. I’ll stay away from matches.”

“I dunno, sometimes they last a little bit, sometimes they hang around,” Pyro said shrugging. He looked at her, seeing her shiver a bit, “You cold? You can have me jacket if ya want it, it’s warm on the inside,” he offered, trying to be polite.

Peep nodded, raking her hand through her hair again. “No, I’m fine.” She waved off his offer of his jacket. Yeah, she was a bit cold, but she didn’t need his jacket. She’d suffer through it. A sudden breeze sent a spay of rain at them and she gasped. She bit her lip, then sighed. “Okay, fine, if you’re offering your jacket…. Thank you.”

Pyro was the only one not running in from the storm. He loved rain, and knew he probably looked insane walking out in it, his face pointed towards the sky. He’d abandoned his last few papers, they had gotten soaked within minutes and his hands were covered in ink. A giant clap of thunder sent him under an awning, “ oh cac!” he yelled, shaking his hair out and pulling his hat off, squeezing it out, then shakingh is hair again, finally noticing Peep there, “Hey!” he said, grinning at her, “Peep love! What’re ya doin’ out in this!?”

Peep cringed away when Pyro joined her under the awning and proceeded to shake out the water in his hair onto her. She groaned and wiped off her face again as she looked over at Pyro. “Presumably the same thing you were doing. Don’t call me love.” She crossed her arms over her chest and leaned back against the brick of the building, shivering slightly. Her clothes were clinging horribly and she just wanted to get back to the lodging house and change into something dry. “Do you think it’s gonna stop soon?”

Peep groaned and dropped the newspaper she had been using as an umbrella, forgetting that wet newspapers tended to bleed ink all over everything. There were a few black streaks down her hair and a bit on the shoulders of her blouse, but nothing too terrible. She continued running, her clothes and hair soaked from the rain. She had decided to sell a bit farther from the lodging house than usual today, but she hadn’t counted on the sudden rainstorm. A crack of thunder made her jump and she darted under a store awning, stopping to catch her breath.

She was soaked to the bone. Sighing, she wrung out her hair and quickly finger-combed it back out of her face as she watched the streets empty. The awning helped a bit, but the wind blowing the rain meant she was still getting wet. Well, that couldn’t be helped. No store was going to let her in looking like a drowned rat, and she was still seven blocks away from the lodging house. Peep shivered slightly as she crossed her arms, leaning against the wall to wait out the storm. Hopefully it would be over soon… A flash of lighting was quickly followed by a crack of thunder and she suppressed a groan. Not very likely.

“I just wanted to be a part of something helpful, I guess,” James said, shrugging. “I didn’t know if another chance like that would come in my lifetime. Wars are so unpredictable, you know? At least, they are until it comes time for them.”

Peep nodded, finishing off her drink. “You gotta take opportunities as they come to you…..” She smiled slightly and pushed herself up to stand. “I need another drink, want one?” She intended to try and talk Ernie into giving her a free drink, or putting it on a tab she could pay off later. She liked drinking here because it was more familiar, but in any other bar, she could usually talk an attentive young man into buying her drinks for her. Here, she didn’t bother to try and get free drinks out of the Bronx boys. Too much effort, in her opinion.

Peep laughed over her drink. “Maybe. I’m usually pretty good at dodging, but, you know, vodka. Hits hard.” She smirked and took another drink. “Tell me about your time in the army?”

“Oh man,” James said, leaning back in his chair with a far off look in his eyes, as if remembering some of the best days of his life. “It was great! It was amazing, we were lead by Teddy Roosevelt, and he’s really a great man. I got the chance to talk to him once or twice. But bein’ on the battlefield… that’s my favorite place to be. That’s where you see a man’s true colors. That’s where it gets real, and you realize you’re scared as hell, but you don’t regret a thing. I was only fifteen when I signed up, but I looked so much older that they didn’t even question me about my age. Ever since I was little I dreamed about bein’ in a war…fightin’ for the innocent.” He paused for a moment, laughing a bit. “I guess that seems like sort of a crazy thing to dream about, huh?”

Peep nodded every so often as she listened to James talk, sipping at her drink slowly. She liked listening to people talk, it made other people happy to talk about themselves and it meant she just had to listen. “That’s interesting. An amazing experience….. Why’d you want to join the army so young?”

roughridersmarch:

James snickered. He was beginning to feel the whiskey, and it just made his mood even brighter. “Maybe we can dodge them. It’d be kinda like army training again.”

Peep laughed over her drink. “Maybe. I’m usually pretty good at dodging, but, you know, vodka. Hits hard.” She smirked and took another drink. “Tell me about your time in the army?”

“You alright?” James asked, noticing her expression when she looked at her glass.

Peep nodded, taking a sip. “Yeah, fine. Just figuring out how much more I can drink before I won’t be able to make it home.” She chuckled softly.

James laughed. “I’m sure between the two of us we can manage to make it there.”

“Oh, good.” Peep grinned. “Although, I doubt even my ability to make it past Ernie’s death traps while inna— inni— inebra— Drunk.” She struggled with the word for a few moments before settling for the much simpler word.

“Thanks a lot for suggestin’ the lodgin’ house to me when I lost my job. I dunno what I would’ve done if you hadn’t,” James said, smiling again.

Peep shrugged, smiling back slightly. “You’re welcome, no problem. I’m sure you’d have figured something out, I just pointed you along.” Her brow furrowed slightly as she looked down at her glass. “Or something like that.” She was at least three quarters done with her drink (she was a fast drinker when she was in a mood) and her head was getting the tiniest bit fuzzy. She just hoped she’d keep making sense.

A Little Birdie Told Me: roughridersmarch: “Well I hope that gets better for ya,” James said,…

roughridersmarch:

“Well I hope that gets better for ya,” James said, nodding in understanding. “Life’s too short, ya know?” He understood her description of how things had been all too well. When he’d lost his family, that had been the way he felt. He’d lived on autopilot for weeks before…

James laughed. “I’ll drink to that,” he said, raising his glass a bit before taking another drink. “Hey Peep?”

Peep grinned and raised her glass to match him. “Yeah?”

“Well I hope that gets better for ya,” James said, nodding in understanding. “Life’s too short, ya know?” He understood her description of how things had been all too well. When he’d lost his family, that had been the way he felt. He’d lived on autopilot for weeks before he finally began to accept it.

Peep nodded. “Yeah, it will. Hope so, anyway.” She took another long drink. “Yeah, life’s too short to dwell. Might as well drink up.” She smirked a bit and leaned back in her seat.

James nodded. “Oh yeah, it’s great! I’ve made friends with Scuffle and a couple of the others and I’ve really been settling in well.” He took another drink before asking, “How has everything been with you? I haven’t seen ya in a while.”

“That’s good, Scuffle’s nice. Funny when he’s drunk….” She trailed off and smirked a bit before taking a long drink. Peep paused to consider his question, frowning slightly. She considered her drink, then took another drink before replying. “Eh, I guess. Not amazing, but fine.”

roughridersmarch:

“Thanks,” James said, smiling. He took a drink before answering. “I like it a lot, actually. I have so much more freedom than I did in my old job. And I don’t have to work all hours of the day.”

Peep smiled as she sipped at her drink. “Yeah, the freedom is wonderful. It’s one of the major perks, in my opinion. I like going where I please and not being trapped inside all day.” She traced her finger around the rim of the glass, then asked, “Are you adjusting to the lodging house well?”

roughridersmarch:

“I’ll settle on whiskey for now,” James said, reaching in his pocket for some money and holding it out to her.

“All right.” Peep smiled and nodded, taking the money and heading over to the bar to chat with Ernie as he got the requested drinks. A few minutes later, she returned to the table, setting the glass of whiskey in from of James and sliding into her seat with her vodka and Coke. “So, James. How’s being a newsie treating you?” She smiled as she sipped her drink.
